Seamus Heaney, poet, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in April 1939, the eldest of nine children. His father owned and worked a small farm in County Derry in Northern Ireland. At the age of twelve he won a scholarship to St. Columb's College, a Catholic boarding school situated in the city of Derry, From 1957 he lived in Belfast, moving in 1972 to the Irish Republic, where he now lives. Thom Gunn was born in Gravesend, Kent, England, in 1929. His first book of poems, "Fighting Terms," was published in 1954, and Gunn was awarded a creative writing fellowship at Stanford University in the same year. From 1958 to 1966 and 1973 to 1990 he taught at the University of California, Berkeley. He received numerous awards during his life, most notably the MacArthur Fellowship for lifetime achievement in poetry in 1993. Gunn passed away in San Francisco, California, in 2004. Fr...
